TOOLS :: SIMON BERRY: Colalife (2009–ONGOING)

Launched by Simon Berry to get life saving medicine as efficiently as possible to isolated places worldwide, his non-profit ColaLife project is all about finding and fully exploiting the crack in the system – or in this case: what is probably the best distribution network in the world, plus the unused space between the bottlenecks in a cola crate. Max Borka reports.
Already in the ‘80s, when working on the British Aid Program in Zambia, Simon Berry became haunted by the paradox that while he could buy a bottle of Coke anywhere, one in every five children under the age of five died in these areas because of dehydration through diarrhea. Adding one thing to the other lead to the idea that Coca-Cola’s gigantic distribution muscle could be used to distribute oral rehydration salts in developing countries. After first attempts to communicate with Coca-Cola failed, television and social media finally proved of great help to convince the company. The AidPod concept of ColaLife consists of a wedge-shaped container that fits inside the unused space between the necks of the bottles in a crate of Coca-Cola, and that carries simple medicines such as oral rehydration salts and information on how to use them, to the most remote areas in developing countries. To make the system sustainable, local enterprises that make money out of collecting and selling crates of Coca-Cola can also make money by delivering Aidpods. Today, as an independent non-profit organization and registered charity, ColaLife also aims at expanding its method to other companies with a deep penetration in developing countries, in order to improve the supply chains for health products.(mb) www.colalife.org
